What Makes Maxe Maxe

Born in the West Shroud during the height of Gridania's campaign against the Moonkeeper population, Sahashin has always been at odds with the forest theocracy. But as she got older, her relationship both with the forest and with her clan grew more complicated. Her older sisters, Zehli and Khyri, were both better candidates to replace their granddmother as Matriarch than Maxe was. But Khyri refused, dedicating herself entirely to the practice of medicine and Zehli was absorbed into the very, very problematic gang known as the Coeurlclaws. That doesn't mean Clan Sahashin was ready to throw their lot in on Maxe. Maxe is an embarrassment. She left the forest almost the day she could and has since lived in a windmill in the Grey Fleet on Vylbrand. She writes smut novels. She uses her windmill to wind and sell springs. She's... a little crazy. Then again, her cousin Esther fled even farther and more aggressively than Maxe did. Her cousin Madje gave up her claim to family to lead a coalition of deeply religious clans. Her cousin Rex was disowned and left for dead. The future of Clan Sahashin is a grim one with a generation that is unwilling or unwelcome to take the Matriarch title. And Maxe is very, very fine with that. So are most of the others in her generation. Maxe is happy to live under the Limsan standard and write terrible romance novels. Maxe is also happy to be a journalist for institutions like The Crystal Chronicle, Garnet Gazette or Crucible. But all these factors - family trauma, offbeat Bohemian lifestyle and, yes, an admitted propensity to be attracted to people she has a consanguinous relationship to, have contributed to a melodramatically overblown lifestyle. Maxe lives in a windmill. Maxe declares her desire to kill the Coerulclaw King. For Maxe, the line between journalist and novelist is how much of her own personal, odd reality she includes in the story she tells. Those ideas exist on a continuum for Maxe. And as that's caused some small problems in journalism, it causes a lot more problems for her novel publisher, Lominsian Lily Publishing. Since Maxe feels less bound by reality in her novels, but still feels a need to tell stories about familiar figures or causes or ideas, Maxe has a habit of pissing people off. She releases a new novel about the intimate lives of a world leader every Valentione's. She's written about an Inquisitor joining the Heretics in Ishgard motivated by love. She's accidentally written about real people when she was sure her characters were fictitious. After a very violent falling out with her former publisher Lominsian Lily, Maxe started her own publishing company, Skywatcher's Secret. It has not been going well, but Maxe continues to be, barely, profitable without a conventional support structure.Maxe says she "lives big", Lominsian Lily says she likes being sued. But her books are so profitable that she's worth the constant legal fees. And security detail. And occasionally her getting travel bans from various nations.

Tribal History

The Sahashins were settled in the West Shroud. During the heydey of Gridanian hostility toward Keepers, they became somewhat reclusive in the borderlands between the Shroud and Mor Dhona. In around 6AE 1470, a group lead by Khianna Sahashin left the shroud altogether and settled in the Footfalls of Western Thanalan. The Khianna were nearly wiped out in the collapse of large sections of the Footfalls caused by the Calamity.About twenty years prior to the calamity (6AE 1554), Maxe's mother ascended to Matriarch. She took a hardline stance on defending the clan against Gridania, focusing resources of the clan on developing martial and witchy defensive forces. As part of her radical protection of the clan, her first ten years are marked by an increasingly fanatic obsession with the old ways, including things like trading males without their consent and excising anyone not purely Keeper. After the Agrias incident in the 1560s, the defense forces trained by Sahashin were sent on hit-and-run raids into Gridanian territory, emboldened by the threat Gridania faced from Garlemald.Maxe is born in 6AE 1564 on 11/5 at the height of her mother's worst behavior. It's around this time that Rexa Sahashin is expelled at birth from the tribe and given to her Seeker father. Maxe was eight when the Calamity happened and severely damaged the main host of the Sahashin tribe as it did the Khianna offshoot. Most in the forest did survive the flooding of the West Shroud but the tribe's lands were completely devastated. She, her sisters, her cousins, and the entire Seventh Umbral generation of the tribe grew up in a time where the Matriarch's obsession lost it's initial 'necessary evil' status, instead hampering their efforts to rebuild and seeming less needed thanks to a weakened Gridania's inability to continue their campaign of genocide. This caused the young Sahashins to seek out often melodramatic ways of bucking their matriarch's customs. Maxe left to become a romance novelist in La Noscea. Esther joined a group of nomadic Keeper travelers. Madje abandoned the family name altogether to pursue the witchery of Sahashin as a belief system for other Keepers (it's kinda a cult, Maxe says). Miryah sought a life of tomb-raiding adventure. Each refuses to be the successor-in-training. It wasn't until 7AE 10, when considering the future of the Sahashins, that Maxe decided to be the next Martiarch after all.

Works of Maxe Sahashin

While the works below are not the only in the cataloger of Maxe Sahashin, they are the only ones that sold any copies. Likely because they are the most salacious and scandalous things Maxe has ever gotten published.

Out of Character

Maxe is not, in fact, insane. This is an important thing to know about her. Especially because it's hard to believe. But Maxe likes to say she 'lives big'. She's the kind of person who says things like 'The pen is mightier than the sword, so dip your spear in ink." It's hard to take her seriously. She likes it that way. Maxe also has an extremely weak form of the Echo. If you'd like to try and put up with a cat 'living big', some sample hooks include:

  • Seeking a dubiously authentic spiritual advisor.

  • Needing information and advice about climate and weather.

  • Looking to become an author.

  • Fighting Coeurlclaws.

  • Looking for good smut.

  • A book of Maxe's is, it turns out, about your character.
